Now, this deserves its own blog post. This suggestion that was published in Time Science sounds both completely horrifying and entirely possible. In the future, the articles says, because of decline in fish stocks, fishing nations around the world will be eating whales instead of fish.
Think about it. We are fighting today for reducing noise, showing mercy, helping stranded whales, stopping whaling, whale massacre, captivity. But it can get so, so much worse. Forget about helping whales, people will be harvesting them like they harvest fish stocks today.
The first sign that it could indeed become a reality is the suggestion by whaling nations that “whale populations need to be culled to reduce their threat to fast-disappearing fish stocks”. They even had a nerve to call it “ecosystem management”. Never mind that it was not whales, but fishing nations that decimated fish stocks.
It is hard to think that the day will come when people will eat whales because there is no fish left. And yet somehow it seems entirely possible given how things are developing today. Oh, horror!
With the UN ‘Law of the Sea’ and the hyper-Orwellian nature of all things UN, and ‘civilized’ people’s RELENTLESS REFUSAL TO STOP EATING MEAT, this could EASILY happen. Of course, the meat could only contain SAFE LEVELS OF MERCURY AND RADIO-NUCLIDES. I personally do not believe that Capt. Paul Watson is a vegan or even a vegetarian…only meat-eaters are that fat. Then, there’s the SOYLENT GREEN scenario…watch it here:

I also remember in Arthur C. Clarke’s novel (which he told me was his best one) “The Songs of Distant Earth” they are farming the oceans for anything that could be eaten, including whales.

…. something wrong here or in my head. Whales should be on top of food chain. So, not really big biomass (globally). Of course, they can be killed, but such act will hardly give enough food even for small country. Speaking about Arthur C. Clarke books – he did VERY interesting turn at the middle and end of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deep_Range . (Wiki surprisingly silent about this turn!)
