Why do whales and dolphins strand? Nobody knows. This behavior has been observed since humans started keeping writing records, and yet we still do not know why it happens. There are many unsolved mysteries on our planet and this is one of them.
Unfortunately today humans are responsible for at least some of these strandings, yet nearly nothing is done to understand why strandings occur or to stop the strandings and rescue and rehabilitate stranded animals. Many species are not even given any consideration at all and are often euthanized on the spot (such as all big whales, beaked whales or even pygmy sperm whales).
